Thinking Green

CAA policies and programs support reducing vehicle fuel consumption to help decrease the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, as well as research and development of alternative fuel technologies and hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles.

Try it now!

CAA has developed an online tool that allows you to compare the costs, as well as the environmental benefits, of purchasing a more fuel-efficient vehicle. Simply input a vehicle of your choice, along with expected mileage and gas prices, and you will be shown a detailed comparison, using data supplied by Natural Resources Canada, with a comparative hybrid model.

Primer on Automobile Fuel Efficiency & Emissions

CAA and Pollution Probe have partnered to produce a comprehensive publication, and other tools, on what industry, government and drivers can do to greatly improve fuel efficiency and reduce the impact of the automobile on the environment. This Primer was a follow-up to the eco-mobility plan Driving Towards a Cleaner Environment produced by both organizations in 2006. Read more on the Primer and find other educational tools regarding automobile fuel efficiency...

Did You Know:

1995 model year and older vehicles produce 19 times more air pollution than 2004 and newer models?  The following links help retire higher polluting vehicles and create a cleaner environment for Canadians.

Car Heaven is an initiative designed to reward and enable people to get their older, high-polluting cars permanently off the road. When you donate your car to charity (see list on Car Heaven website), you will receive a charitable tax receipt. www.carheaven.ca/donate/saskatchewan.aspx

Retire Your Ride, Canada’s Vehicle Recycling Program, offers a range of rewards to retire your 1995 or older model year vehicle. www.retireyourride.ca

What is CAA Saskatchewan doing to be eco-friendly?

In the community..

CAA Saskatchewan is also proud to participate in the National Commuter Challenge in June, encouraging employees to leave their vehicles at home and carpool, cycle, walk or take public transit during the week. As well, we are proud to be the exclusive provincial sponsor of Carpool Week, coordinated every October by the organization Carpool.ca. For more information or to find other commuters with similar trips and schedules so you can carpool together, visit Carpool.ca.

In our offices...

Our 12 provincial offices and administration offices recycle paper products, cardboard, plastic printer cartridges and beverage containers, and we adhere to optimal maintenance schedules for service vehicles. Our used tires, oil, engine coolant and steel are recycled. All batteries that CAA replaces on our service vehicles, at our two Car Care Plus locations and through Battery Assist are sent to facilities where they are 100% recycled. Programmable thermostats are installed when upgrading CAA-owned offices and non-essential lights are turned off after hours to cut energy consumption. Solar film on windows helps with heating/cooling conservation.

In our magazine...

Our Member publication, Westworld magazine (which is printed on 10% post-consumer waste paper), includes stories related to the environment, and our employee e-newsletter has a regular ‘thinking green’ section providing eco-friendly tips to staff.

Not Left Holding the Bag: Did you know that a plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to break down or that one reusable shopping bag can eliminate as many as 1,500 plastic bags from landfills in its lifetime?

Now, thanks to a new initiative between AAA and CAA, Clubs are making it easier for Members to be eco-friendly by offering 'green' reusable bags for sale at all branches. The bags (which are being sold for a nominal charge of 99 cents), will hopefully help to cut down on the 10,000 plastic bags that CAA Saskatchewan goes through yearly, reduce waste and improve the environment.
