The trip to Newfoundland far exceeded our expectations. We saw many more attractions than we would have seen on our own.

Departure
July 16 - 26 (11 days)
| Day 1 |
Home Cities to Deer Lake |
| Depart home for Deer Lake and transfer to hotel for your overnight stay. |
| Day 2 |
Deer Lake to Plum Point |
|
In Corner Brook, tour the Captain James Cook Monument National Historic Site then depart for Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we will visit the Discovery Centre and Broom Point. After a water taxi ride from Woody Point to Norris Point, it's on to Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse with a great view of Bonne Bay and the surrounding mountains. Finally, we head north for our home tonight, Plum Point. |
| Day 3 |
Plum Point to St. Anthony |
| Depart Plum Point for L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, the home of Lief the Lucky and the Viking people who settled here. You can tour the reconstructed sod huts as animators recreate daily life at the site. In St. Anthony, we visit the Grenfell home and the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital to see the Jordi Bonet Murals. The murals tell the story of the Grenfell Mission, which was named for famous medical missionary Sir Wilfred Grenfell. Dinner tonight is a Viking feast in a replica of Lief the Lucky's home. |
| Day 4 |
Plum Point to L’Anse-au-Clair |
| Today, we depart for St. Barbe and take the ferry through Iceberg Alley, where you will likely have an opportunity to marvel at the sight of majestic icebergs and breaching whales. Arrive at Red Bay National Historic Site, World Whaling Capital, A.D. 1550-1600. At the Visitor Centre, experienced guides interpret the Basque whaling activity in the area during the 16th century. |
| Day 5 |
L’Anse-au-Clair to Rocky Harbour |
| At Point Amour Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site, if you’re up to the challenge, climb the 122 steps to the top of this castle-like structure, the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada. We depart Labrador via ferry and our first stop is the Arches Provincial Park where caves, carved by undersea wave action, have been thrust above the surface over the eons. Tonight, relax and be prepared to tap your toes to the music of the popular local band Anchors Aweigh. |
| Day 6 |
Rocky Harbour to Gander |
| We depart this morning for Grand Falls-Windsor, where we visit the Salmonid Interpretation Centre, a fabulous place to watch Atlantic salmon as they migrate to their spawning grounds. Then it's on to Gander, often called the “Crossroads of the World.” It has been an aviation town since the 1930s and we will visit the Atlantic Aviation Museum that tells the story. This evening, we partake in a Newfoundland ‘Mug up’. |
| Day 7 |
Gander to Clarenville |
| At Boyd’s Cove, we tour the Beothuk Interpretation Centre, and in Twillingate, we visit the Prime Berth Historic Fishing Village and its Living History Museum. From there, it's on to the Long Point Lighthouse built in 1876. We depart Twillingate for the Clarenville area for our overnight stay. En route, we will visit Gambo, birthplace of Joseph R. Smallwood, the first Premier of the province and one of the original “Fathers of Confederation”, and Joey’s Lookout. At Terra Nova National Park, we visit the interpretation Centre at Salton’s Brook to learn about the marine habitat of the area. |
| Day 8 |
Clarenville |
| Today, we continue our journey to Bonavista and Trinity and go back into history to the voyage of John Cabot, who sailed from England to Newfoundland landing at Cape Bonavista in 1497. One of the “must-sees” is the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site, which has been restored to its original 1843 condition. Other stops include the monument to John Cabot located near the lighthouse, Ryan Premises National Historic Site – which includes the Bonavista Museum – a replica of Cabot’s ship “Matthew” at Ye Matthew Legacy, and the Dungeon Provincial Park, a collapsed sea cave. Next, we visit the old town of Trinity, which is mostly a national heritage district. There are also several provincial historic sites, such as Hiscock House Provincial Historic Site, where guides dressed in period costume escort you on your tour, and Lester Garland Premises Provincial Historic Site. Other stops include the Lester Garland House/Wessex Learning Centre and St. Paul’s Anglican Church. While in Trinity, we will stop by the Green Family Forge Blacksmith Museum and the Trinity Museum and Archives, as well as the Trinity Interpretation Centre. A special treat this evening; an authentic Newfoundland Screech In. |
| Day 9 |
Clarenville to St. John’s |
| Today, we travel to St. John’s, the capital city of the province. Along the way, we will visit Heart’s Content Cable station. This afternoon, we tour the city, including Signal Hill National Historic Site, Government House, the Anglican Cathedral and the Cape Spear National Historic Site. |
| Day 10 |
St. John’s |
| We depart St. John’s for the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve and take a boat tour to see the nesting seabirds, humpback whales and icebergs. En route to St. John’s, we will tour Cape Spear National Historic Site. Tonight, join all your friends for the WestWorld Farewell Dinner. |
| Day 11 |
St. John’s to Home Cities |
| Sadly, all good things must come to an end. This morning we transfer to the airport for your flight home. | |
