What is Critical Illness Insurance?
Critical Illness Insurance helps provide financial protection for Canadians diagnosed with severe health conditions. This includes conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. Critical Illness Insurance can provide a lump-sum payout when you’re diagnosed with a covered condition, which can be used to cover anything you and your family might need, from medical expenses to lost income.
Who should get Critical Illness Insurance?
Critical Illness Insurance is there for you to provide a financial safety for your loved ones who depend on your income. Health uncertainties mean you might need to take time off work or face unexpected medical expenses. Critical Illness Insurance allows you to focus on recovering for your loved ones while it provides financial support when emergency savings aren’t enough.
This valuable protection should be considered if you’re:
- Parents with children.
- Employed individuals without company group insurance for Critical Illnesses.
- Individuals without sufficient emergency savings.
- Freelancers and self-employed individuals.

Here are some commonly asked questions about Critical Illness Insurance.
Still have questions? Speak to a licensed, non-commissioned advisor at +1 (866) 714-9007 Monday to Friday between 7:30 AM – 7 PM CST.
Over half of Canadians (55%) have only 3 months or less in emergency savings to cover their expenses (*Source: Angus Reid, December 2021). Critical Illness insurance can provide financial support to cover you and your loved ones from a loss of income caused by a covered illness and/or unexpected healthcare & change-of-lifestyle expenses required to support recovery.
A starting point between 3 to 6 months of your post-tax income is recommended. From there, you might want to adjust the coverage amount based on your financial situation (e.g. existing debts, income, monthly expenses, number of dependents, etc.).
