Results of the CAA School Zone Safety Assessment at Argyle Elementary School

On May 21, 2025, CAA Saskatchewan conducted a school zone safety assessment at Argyle Elementary School in Regina. Staff from the school, City of Regina, Regina Police Service and CAA Saskatchewan partnered to identify and track risky behaviours in the school zone. The assessment was held from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. and 3:15 to 4:00 p.m.—peak drop-off and pick-up times.

Angel Blair, CAA’s School Zone Safety Coordinator, stressed the importance of the initiative: “The CAA School Zone Safety Assessment is an online application (app) that tracks the identified risky behaviours and ultimately provides education and awareness about the importance of school zone safety.”

At no cost to the school, the app can be booked through CAA by contacting CAA Saskatchewan. The assessment itself requires school or community volunteers to collect data onsite and schools can customize it by selecting specific problematic behaviours to track. The results are then shared with staff, students, families, community partners, and local decision-makers to bring awareness to the risky behaviours, encourage safe practices when driving or walking through school zones, and discuss next steps required to improve the safety in these areas.

“Thanks to the CAA app and volunteers we were able to get the information we needed to communicate with families and the community to make our very busy intersections safer for our students. We are hopeful that the information we collected will help us talk with our community partners to obtain safer crossing systems to keep everyone safe," said Chris Weber, Vice-Principal, Argyle Elementary School.

The total number of infractions tracked was 471 with jaywalking and speeding topping the list.

In addition to reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert, and obey posted traffic laws, CAA urges pedestrians to:

  • STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, and THINK before crossing any street or busy intersection

  • Cross only at designated crosswalks

  • Never jaywalk, and never run out between parked cars, buses, or buildings

Motorists are reminded that we can all work together to protect school communities by:

  • Eliminating distracted driving

  • Observing traffic laws and posted speed limits

  • Paying attention to No Stopping and No Parking signage

  • Avoiding U-turns in school zones, which are illegal in some municipalities

  • Coming to a full stop at all stop signs
