CAA School Safety Patrollers Need Your Help to Keep School Zones Safe

CAA Saskatchewan is reminding motorists to be alert around schools and playgrounds. With students back in class, busy extra-curricular schedules, and the arrival of cooler weather school zones are becoming more congested. Our CAA School Safety Patrollers are doing their best to keep everyone safe.

Motorists, here is how you can help them:

  • Slow down to the posted school zone speed limit.
  • Look for instructions from CAA School Safety Patrollers on duty in school zones. They are wearing CAA fluorescent/reflective vests and are watching for both students and drivers.
  • Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students.
  • Allow students enough time to cross the street safely - intersections could be wet or covered in frost.
  • Watch for children darting out from between parked cars or buildings.

Even when not driving, you can still help our CAA School Safety Patrollers. Parents, caregivers, and teachers can help children stay safe on their journey to and from school by teaching them how to safely share the road with motorists and cyclists.

Here are a few tips:

  • Stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing the street.
  • Cross at intersections or at corners and refrain from jay walking.
  • Wait for the signal of the on-duty CAA School Safety Patroller to cross the street in a school zone.
  • Ensure warm clothing such as toques and hooded jackets do not obstruct children’s vision or hearing.

CAA Saskatchewan has owned and operated the CAA School Safety Patrol program since 1951. On behalf of the almost 4,500 patrollers in over 200 communities – thank you for helping us keep school zones safe in this province. Are you a school or community leader interested in starting your own CAA School Safety Patrol? Starter kits with training materials, stop paddles and reflective vests are free of charge.
